Tuning your marketing to perform.

Should You Bother with Google Places for Business?

Yes, another local listing service – but one you shouldn’t pass up! A Google Places for Business listing is a wonderful way to position your small business as a leader in your niche, in your particular location.

While it’s true some business types might do better in a local regard – hair salons and restaurants, for example – each and every business can benefit by connecting with local customers (especially if your competitors aren’t there yet).

Even if you do operate in a highly competitive industry, you have a better chance of reaching a relevant local searcher with Places for Business than trying to compete on a national, or international, search playing field. Happily, your listing will show up on Google’s search, maps, Google+, and mobile devices.

Ready to get started? Great! Submitting your site is easy

Claim your listing by visiting and logging in with your Google account.

After you add information about your business, you’ll need to verify your business with a postcard you’ll receive by mail (makes sense right?).

Finally, you can focus on optimizing your listing:

  • Fill in every relevant field, including a headline, business description, contact information, hours, and location
  • Add high-quality photos
  • Improve the number of reviews you get by making it simple to find your Google+ page (i.e. via your website, your email signature, and through email newsletters)
  • Use quality keywords throughout your listing

For premium users, Google Places for Business integrates seamlessly with Google Adwords. The “Adwords Express” program allows you to easily create and manage ads targeted at local searchers. And of course, it all ties in nicely with Google+ for even more community engagement.
