Social is the new search. Meta keywords don’t matter. You need an iPad app.

As digital marketers, we’re constantly bombarded with changing rules, new media channels, and take-my-advice gurus. While we struggle to stay ahead, we sometimes forget the very fundamentals of what we’re doing.

As a breathing exercise, take a step back and remind yourself of these basics:

  • Generating leads, building our databases, and improving our customer relationships are still what matter most.
  • Quality websites - with useful content and clean navigation - still work, whether or not they are connected in 27 ways to social media.
  • Word of mouth is still the best kind of referral, whether that comes from a blog post or through real mouths over coffee.
  • Email marketing is still one of the most cost effective ways to communicate with customers. Don’t lose sight of its simple brilliance - continue to test your content and hone your target groups.
  • Web traffic and activity should still be monitored via analytics at least weekly. You need to keep track of what is working, and address what’s not, quickly.
